Prince William and Princess Kate donate to London foodbank after thousands were stolen

Prince William and Princess Kate have donated to a food bank that had thousands of donations stolen.

Thieves targeted Southwark Foodbank warehouse in the early hours on Sunday, making off with thousands of pounds worth of food and hygiene products as well as a charity laptop.

The foodbank is run by Pecan, a Christian charity which aims to help the whole community – regardless of faith, race or nationality.

Prince William and Princess Kate made the private donation

A spokesperson from Pecan said: “A huge thank you to [Prince William and Princess Kate] who have donated to the recovery effort following the theft of £3k of food supplies from @southwarkfoodbk.

“All at Pecan have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from across society. Food stocks are being replenished now.”

Southwark Council supports the community hub with around £400,000, for the food bank, running the Southwark Food Alliance, employment support for families and carers and bringing people together.

A council spokesperson confirmed the matter has been reported to police who sent a scenes of crime officer and an investigating officer and security at the warehouse has been strengthened over the last 24 hours.

Kensington Palace confirmed a private donation was made

Cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Southwark Council Councillor Evelyn Akoto said: “I’m deeply saddened that someone chose to steal from such a wonderful, charitable organisation this week. Pecan directly supports those who are in the greatest need, without food or basic items for their families, and offers wider support to families and carers. We will do everything in our power to help them.

“It’s a desperate situation that people are still reliant on food banks in this day and age, but the fact is, many people and their families go without.

“Pecan has supported those in need for many years, working closely with the council to ensure that nobody goes hungry or without a listening ear and some kindness. We will continue with the work we already do to help those on the breadline.

“I’d urge residents to support Pecan while they find their feet and help to replenish their stock by making donations of all kinds, in show of our appreciation for a vital part of the community.”

The Prince of Wales spent time with his aunt Lady Sarah McCorquodale as he hosted an RAF officer graduation ceremony.

William is believed to have invited his mother’s sister to the event at RAF Cranwell, where relatives proudly watched as more 50 cadets graduated, officially becoming officers at the stroke of midnight.

The future King acknowledged the royal salute of more than 50 new officers on the parade ground and told them the country would be relying on them to deal with “future threats” during the present “time of change and uncertainty”.

It is understood Lady Sarah, who lives locally, heard her nephew would be attending the ceremony in Lincolnshire and wanted to see him and lend support.
