The Duke of Sussex wants to hold tabloids accountable for their actions, and his ways differ from those of his family. Prince Harry has spoken publicly about one of his many legal battles against the UK media for the first time.
He recently appeared in an interview for ITV’s documentary ‘Tabloids on Trial’ which premiered yesterday. During his discussion, the father of two highlighted how his decision to fight against intrusion from the tabloid Press had been a ‘central piece’ behind the breakdown of his relationship with the rest of the Royal Family.
The new series focuses on the 2011 phone hacking scandal, in which Harry was found to have been a victim of hacking and other illegal snooping by at least one major UK tabloid. Back in December, a High Court judge ruled that Mirror Group Newspaper had unlawfully gathered information for stories published about Harry and Meghan.
While speaking about his four-year-long battle for the first time, the Duke said he felt ‘vindicated’ by the ruling and called it a ‘monumental victory.’ When asked if fighting against the Press affected his relationship with his family, Harry said, “That’s certainly a central piece to it. But, that’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the Press.” He also talked about how he wishes that his family would have supported him during this battle.
Meghan’s husband explained further, saying, “I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you’re in a public role, these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good. But I’m doing this for my reasons.”
Harry also shared his thoughts on the Royal Family’s decision to not fight against the tabloids in the interview. He said that everything that has happened revealed the truth of the situation to him. He also acknowledged that all of this definitely caused a rift between the now estranged families.
Ever since Harry and Meghan left the royal world in 2020, they continued their fight with the Press and announced they would have ‘no corroboration and zero engagement’ with four UK tabloids – The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Mirror and The Express.
