Rihanna is known almost as much for her savage clapbacks as she is for her music and fashion icon status.
So it was only a matter of time before the sassy songstress unleashed some signature shade on one of her Ocean’s 8 castmates.
During a recent appearance alongside Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Sarah Paulson on The Graham Norton Show, host Graham Norton asked the stars who among them had attended fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala.
Helena Bonham Carter as Rose Weil
When Helena Bonham Carter revealed on The Graham Norton Show, she’d never scored an invite to the prestigious event, Rihanna swiftly went in for the kill:
“That’s because you wear dresses like that.” She gestured mockingly at Carter’s eclectic patterned silk dress while the audience erupted.
Earlier in the interview, her infamous yellow 2015 Met Gala look became a target, the lush Guo Pei robe drew jokes for its resemblance to a giant omelet.
“I put it in the car first and then I had to put it on in the car… the train actually had to come out first so I that I wasn’t like, dragging it out,” Rihanna said, describing the logistical struggles of transporting the voluminous garment.
“You must’ve had some handmaidens,” Carter quipped about the dress’s grandeur.
Cate Blanchett further piled on by asking if they were “under the omelet?” So Rihanna may have felt inclined to return fire by mocking Carter’s signature tastes. But perhaps she should think twice before throwing shade at Bellatrix Lestrange!
Luckily, Carter took Rihanna’s scathing style critique in stride. “That’s right, that’s entirely right. I’m gonna cry now,” the Harry Potter star self-deprecatingly tapped Rihanna on the shoulder amidst her own laughter. Carter has always proudly embraced her daring, eclectic fashion sense with zero apologies.
“I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I dress the way I want to, not for anyone else,” she famously told Grazia in 2011.
Meanwhile, Rihanna herself reigns as a staple attendee at the annual soiree, who doesn’t await her Met Gala looks each year with bated breath? Indeed, between her iconic yellow omelet gown and Carter’s signature quirky garb, fans are always guaranteed bold style statements and laughs from these leading style icons.
Elsewhere during her interview, Norton displayed numerous paparazzi snapshots of Rihanna effortlessly toting beverages despite wearing gravity-defying gowns. One noteworthy image featured the “Wild Thoughts” singer maneuvering an elegant wine glass with ease…while dressed up in a voluminous outfit leaving a fashion show.
“That might have been one that I took to the club,” Rihanna casually admitted upon seeing the picture.
If her scene-stealing yellow 2015 Met Gala ensemble taught us anything, it’s that Rihanna will continually up the shock value of celebrity fashion. And her cheeky dig at Helena Bonham Carter displayed once more her mastery of the art of well-aimed shade. So we eagerly await what style and punchlines the fearless star will serve up next.
