Will Stephen Curry Represent Team USA Again? Analyzing His Stats

Earlier in the year, Steph Curry had made rounds in the news when he expressed his desire to represent the USA internationally in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The 35-year-old had last participated in the 2014 FIBA World Basketball Championship.

The Warriors star wasn’t selected for the 2012 Olympics in London and had withdrawn from the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro due to knee and ankle injuries.

When Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr took on the reins of the head coach for the USA Basketball team, it reignited Curry’s dream of representing his country again.

Kerr had coached Curry in the Warriors team previously while he was the assistant coach of the 2020 Olympic gold medal-winning USA men’s basketball team.

“I’m more than excited about the opportunity to do it. Knowing that Coach Kerr is taking the lead and … I played on those two world championship teams and everybody who’s ever experienced both is never shy to mention how much different the Olympics is. They all say it’s not even close in terms of the vibe and the atmosphere and the buildup and the adrenaline and all that. I don’t know what the chances are, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, but I would love to have that experience at some point for sure,” Curry had stated.

The Ohio-born then rejected an offer to represent his nation at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in a desire to rest for the 2021-22 NBA Season. A surprising decision that paid off after the Warriors clinched the title for the fourth time in the last eight years.

Steph Curry career high in the World Championships isn’t what you’d expect
The baby-faced assassin had won gold medals for the USA in both of his appearances at the FIBA World Championships. In the 2010 Turkey FIBA Championship, he recorded 4.6 per game, 2.1 assists per game, and 1.4 rebounds per game. Additionally, in his second World Cup appearance Curry recorded 10.7 points per game with 2.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Fans were surprised after the USA entered the 2023 FIBA Championship without him. A decline in the USA’s performance at the 2019 Championship had led to many speculating the return of the 35-year-old. The Splash Brother had shown interest in playing in the Championship but opted out later preferring his health and recovery for the NBA season.

Meanwhile, Curry was recently in the news when he declared himself and Magic Johnson as the best point guard in the history of the NBA. Jumping on the bandwagon, the legendary Michael Jordan had also participated in the debate declaring Magic Johnson slightly ahead of the other contender. However, the NBA community still remains divisive.
